Using Google Analytics to Determine How Many Mobile Visitors You Have

Video and Internet-capable mobile devices currently comprise approximately 2% of all web traffic. This ratio can vary greatly from site to site, however, and Google Analytics is a great means of determining the proportion of mobile users in the mix of your own site’s traffic.  It’s free and relatively simple, and making use of it will provide you with a wide variety of important data that you can use to make intelligent business decisions for your sites.

Once you have installed Google Analytics, using it to analyze your traffic is pretty straightforward.

For example, to determine the percentage of mobile users hitting your site:log into your Google Analytics account. Then select the site you’re looking to evaluate traffic on, and click on ‘visitors’ in the left hand column. Then select ‘Browser Capabilities. From there, a sub-menu shows up and you click on ‘operating systems.’

Now you can see your statistics and the percentage of surfers coming from different operating systems. If you click into Windows, you can also see the windows Mobile statistics if you look for Windows CE. You will probably notice that this % is pretty minimal like 1 to 2% of your traffic. This may not sound like much, but there are two things to consider here…

First the mobile browsing market for video-capable phones is a rapidly growing market. As with any emerging market, especially those driven by specific technological developments, it’s important for you to get in early to take full advantage of rapid sector growth.

Second, consider the question of whether your standard sites are doing anything to monetize the 1 to 2% of visitors who are arriving at the site via a mobile browser. The short answer is “no, they aren’t.” The vast majority of sites that are not specifically optimized for mobile traffic are difficult to navigate on a mobile device, are image-heavy and therefore slow loading on a mobile device, and do not offer videos that can be played back on most mobile platforms. The signup process alone is cumbersome enough that the bounce rate for mobile traffic hitting a standard pay site’s join page is in excess of 70%.

Now that you have a handle on how to determine the amount of mobile traffic your site has, you can see how important it is to make the most of this traffic.
